This annual award was instituted in 1996, and from 2002 – 2005 was sponsored by AstraZeneca (and was known as the AstraZeneca Medal). From 2006- 2015, the award was again known as the ASTH Medal and between 2016 and 2023 it was known as the THANZ Medal. In 2024, the Medal was renamed the THANZ Claire McLIntock Medal.

Claire McLintock, a distinguished hematologist and past president of THANZ, passed away in December 2022, at the age of 57. Originally from Scotland, Claire immigrated to New Zealand in 1990 and became a globally recognized expert in thrombosis and haemostasis, particularly in women’s health. She was deeply passionate about improving care for women with bleeding and clotting disorders, especially during pregnancy. Her groundbreaking work in anticoagulation for women with mechanical heart valves has saved and improved countless lives. In memory of her remarkable contributions to haematology, we are proud to establish the THANZ Claire mcLintock Medal.
