The COBRRA Trial and the Power of International Collaboration

Home » News » The COBRRA Trial and the Power of International Collaboration

The landmark COBRRA (Comparison of Bleeding Risk between Rivaroxaban and Apixaban for acute VTE) trial has been published in the New England Journal of Medicine today.

This open-label study, conducted across 32 sites in Australia, Canada, and Ireland, was designed to address a significant clinical gap: the absence of head-to-head trials between direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) that has previously prevented clinical guidelines from recommending a specific drug for acute VTE.

THANZ was a critical partner in this landmark international collaboration. This achievement would not have been possible without the dedication of our lead partners, the Canadian Venous Thromboembolism Clinical Trials and Outcomes Research (CanVECTOR) Network and the International Network of Venous Thromboembolism Clinical Research Networks (INVENT). We extend our deepest gratitude to them for their shared vision and leadership.

Locally, we extend a special and profound thanks to our Australian lead and fellow THANZ member, A/Prof Vivien Chen. Vivien’s successful Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF) grant application was the catalyst that enabled the vital participation of our Australian sites.

The success of the COBRRA trial highlights the amazing work we can accomplish as a united thrombosis and haemostasis community. It is a powerful testament to what we can achieve when we pool our expertise, resources, and passion across borders to directly improve patient outcomes.

Please join THANZ in congratulating A/Prof Chen and everyone involved in bringing this vital research to fruition!!!
