Research Grant Applications

The 2025 S&E Trust research grant funding round is now open. The grant may be used for small research projects, to supplement existing research projects or for larger research projects.

In 2025, there is up to Aus $20,000 available for one or more research grants.

When open, all applications must be made by submitting the on-line application form at the bottom of this page, together with the required supporting documentation.

You must include:
1) A full curriculum vitae, highlighting undergraduate training, awards and prizes, other fundng, postgraduate training and experience, publications and presentations at state, national and international meetings.
2) In no more than 3 A4 pages (2cm margins, 12 point font) provide an overview of the nature of the research work to be undertaken including hypothesis, objectives, background, methods (including proposed statistical approach), any preliminary data relevant to the proposal, the project significance, and details of other researchers and collaborators involved in the project and their contribution to the work proposed. Supporting references may be additional to the 3 pages.
3) A detailed budget for your research project listing likely expenses (consumables, equipment access, personnel support, unique or specific reagents, animal costs etc) and the proposed means of funding from all other sources.
4) Details of HREC approval or submission where appropriate
5) An explanation of how the Grant will benefit you and your institution
6) A letter of support/recommendation from your supervisor and endorsed by your institutions Responsible Officer

Terms & Conditions

1. APPLICATIONS

a) The applicant must be a member of THANZ and a resident of Australia or New Zealand, hold appropriate and relevant qualifications, and have appropriate experience and ability in research.

b) Where the applicant is the member of the staff of an institution or organisation, the applicant must have written approval of the responsible officer of the institution or organisation. The responsible officer may be a registrar of a university, director of a research institution, or CEO of hospitals and other organisations.

c) Where the applicant is a member of staff of an institution or organisation, all communication to and from the Fund relating to applications for grants, the award of grants, conditions associated with grants and payment of grants, shall be through the responsible officer of the organisation or institution.

d) The award of any Fund grant is subject to the formal acceptance of the grant and conditions associated with the grant by the recipient of the grant, the Head of Department where the work will be carried out, and the responsible officer of the institution or organisation.

e) Applications to the Fund which have previously been unsuccessful may be submitted for further funding rounds with clear indication that the same research application has been submitted before.

f) All grants are subject to funds being available and the Fund is not bound to make any awards in any calendar year.

g ) The Fund will not provide support for salary or wages and the budget should not include a financial component for salary or wages of the applicant or any co-investigator.

h) Preference will be given to applications with international collaborations from developing countries in Asia.

2. ETHICS CONSIDERATION

Research projects must be compliant with:

• Australian Code for the Responsible Conduct of Research

• National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research (2007 and updated 2018)

• Australian Code for the Care and use of Animals for Scientific Purposes; 8th Edition (2013); and

where human experimentation is proposed, certification of ethics approval from an appropriate body (an appropriate institutional or other ethics review committee) will be required before the funding will be paid.

3. PAYMENT OF GRANTS

a) Grants are given as a fixed sum and for a specified period. Under no circumstances will the approved sum be varied as the research proceeds.

b) Payment of money in respect of any grant shall be upon the terms and conditions specified in the grant application process. Payments will be made to the institution or organisation of the grant recipient. Payments through institutions or organisations shall be

by 2 equal instalments- the first payment will be made upon receipt of a tax invoice from the institution or organization, together with a signed acknowledgement and acceptance of the grant offer; and the second payment will be made after receipt of a progress report and a further tax invoice.
or otherwise by agreement before the first payment.
A tax invoice must be provided before any payment is made.

c) A progress report must be provided before a second or further payment is made.

d) The Fund must be notified immediately a grant recipient leaves an institution or organisation. When a recipient leaves before the expiration of that grant, the grant may be terminated or transferred at the discretion of the Fund.

e) Grants which have not been expended or committed by the recipient at the end of the specified period shall be refunded, except where the Fund approves the money being carried forward.

f) Grants will be used solely for the purpose for which they were approved. Failure to carry out the research project in the terms of the grant shall be a breach of conditions of the grant and the institution, organisation or individual shall be responsible for refunding part or all of the money already paid and any further payments will be terminated.

g) The grant will be terminated if in the opinion of S&E trustees the research for which the grant is approved is not being carried out with competence, diligence and scientific honesty.

h) Each institution or organisation will undertake to provide all necessary overhead expenses and institutional or organisational maintenance charges and no portion of the grant shall be applied to these purposes.

i) Except as provided by the following clause, all taxes, duties and government charges imposed or levied in Australia or New Zealand, or overseas in connection with the performance of this grant shall be borne by the institution or organisation.

j) In Australia, the grant payable will include a GST component to cover liability for Goods and Services tax (“GST”). A tax invoice must be issued by the grantee to the Fund.

k) The grant recipient shall be responsible for seeking all required regulatory approvals for any equipment or materials purchased outside their country of residence.

l) Any discovery arising out of research projects supported by the Fund shall not be the subject of an application for patents without the prior written approval of THANZ and the agreement of the institution or organisation in which the work is carried out.

m) Intellectual property resulting from funded research usually belongs to the institution or organisation and must be handled in the public interest.

4. RESPONSIBILITY OF THE GRANT RECIPIENT

Any individual, institution or organisation accepting a grant from the Fund accepts full responsibility and legal liability for any act or acts related to, or arising from, any project supported by the Fund and the Fund shall not be responsible or liable for such act or acts in any way.

5. REPORTS

a) A Progress Report must be submitted after the mid-point of the project but not later than 6 months past the mid-point of the project

b) If a Progress Report is not received by the due date, the grant may be terminated at the discretion of the Fund.

c) The grant recipient shall provide a Final Report at the completion of the project, no later than 1 year past the completion. This Final Report should include a list of publications arising from the research.

d) If a Final Report is not received by the due date, the grant recipient will be ineligible for any further award or grant from THANZ, until such time that the Final Report is received.

6. PUBLICATION OF RESULTS

Recipients of grants from the Fund are expected to make their results available through relevant and appropriate scientific publications and meetings. Recipients shall not make public the results of their research through any other channels without the prior written approval of the Fund. Grant recipients may indicate their status as a grant recipient in scientific publications and programs of scientific meetings, but not in any other public connection.

The Fund should be acknowledged in any publications arising from the research where part or full funding has been provided. A reprint or digital link of any journal publication or a copy of any monograph or print publication on the work shall be provided to THANZ.
